Biography

Marco Malagodi is currently an Associate Professor of Environmental and Cultural Heritage Chemistry (CHEM01-B) at the University of Pavia - Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage. He is the Scientific Coordinator of the Arvedi Laboratory for Non-Invasive Diagnostics in Cremona, a permanent member of the Scientific Committee of the Museo del Violino, and the Head of the Restoration Laboratories at the University of Pavia.

His main research activities focus on the characterization of historical wooden artefacts, particularly ancient musical instruments, using micro-invasive and non-invasive diagnostic techniques. His research is strongly rooted in the field of chemistry and concerns the study of natural and synthetic products commonly employed in the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage. He has conducted significant studies on the interactions between varnishes on historical violins and the underlying wood. He has also carried out research on ancient and modern inks and has applied photographic imaging techniques to the study of manuscripts.

Author of more than 120 scientific papers, he has participated in over 80 international conferences dedicated to heritage science.
