Biography

​​Rachel Cowgill MBE is a cultural-historical musicologist and Professor of Music at the University of York, where she is Associate Dean for Research (Arts & Humanities) and Director of the Humanities Research Centre. Her co-edited collection with Derek B. Scott, Music and Ideas of North, is due out with Routledge in 2025/26 and she is currently completing a project on public and private music-making in women's diaries in late eighteenth-century Yorkshire. Rachel is a founding co-editor of the Boydell and Brewer book series ‘Music in Britain, 1600-2000’ and a member of the Editorial Board of the White Rose University Press.
